JEAN LATOURRETTE FROM OSSE, BEARN (FRANCE)

by John E. La Tourette, Ph. D.
President Emeritus of Northern Illinois University
JEAN LATOURRETTE left Osse, Bearn, France in 1685 and came to America in the fall of 1687, with Pastor Pierre Peiret and his family. There are now many descendants of Jean Latourrette and Marie Mercereau, married on July 16, 1693 in the French Church of New York (Eglise Francaise du St. Esprit), in America. There are still Latourrettes in the Aspe Valley, in which Osse-en-Aspe (modern postal name for Osse) is located, and others scattered around the world. This represents a progress report on the research which the author has conducted over the past three years to determine why and how Jean left Osse.

Presented below first is a summary, followed by a longer, more fully documented article of 53 pages. The summary and the longer article are presented both in English and French, in that order. A series of papers will be added to this Webpage correcting the gross misinformation from the papers of Lyman Latourette and Mrs. Jacob about Jean Latourrette, which is mentioned in passing in what is now being placed here in terms of the article "Jean Latourrette Leaving Osse: Why and How?".

The summary and longer article are dedicated to the memory of Jean Latourrette and Pastor Pierre Peiret, who came to New York City in 1687, and the spirit of the village they left in 1685 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary, celebrated on August 7, 2005, of the reconstruction of the Protestant Temple in Osse-en-Aspe, the original having been destroyed in 1686.

CORRECTIONS ON JEAN LATOURRETTE’S LIFE BEFORE 1693 A series of articles will be posted below correcting Lyman Latourette’s Latourette Annals in America (1954) and Mrs. Verna Jacob’s 1965 Compilation. Ninety-nine percent of what they say about Jean Latourrette, up to and including his marriage in 1693, is incorrect.
